FOR PARENTS

We work with children who have both mental health and educational problems. We are perhaps unique in that we see these two problems as inseparable in many cases. For example, a child with Asperger’s syndrome or ADHD often suffers the greatest distress in a school setting, while a student with dyslexia might easily be experiencing anxiety or other emotional distress as a result of impairment in the classroom. Nevertheless, for ease of navigation and reading, we have separated mental health (or Clinical Psychology) from the cognitive and developmental dysfunctions that lead to impairment in academic and social functioning.

Programmes & resources for Parents

Understanding Words is a structured teaching programme for students with word-level reading and spelling weaknesses. It also includes vocabulary, reading comprehension, and grammatical exercises. Development of the programme was based on the scientific reading literature. Our data has demonstrated its effectiveness when administered by a parent in the home with brief training and ongoing support from a clinician.

Tip Sheets & Forms
The Tip Sheets & Forms pages provide information about a number of common developmental dysfunctions and information about specific disorders and dysfunctions, such as ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger’s Syndrome, and memory weaknesses. The Tip Sheets & Forms pages also provide suggestions for how teachers can help student with these learning differences and a number of useful parent handouts and clinical tools, such as a Medication Monitoring Tool for ADHD.

The Family, Academic, Affective, Cognitive, and Teacher (FAACT) Model. The  model and associated explanations helps understand the interdependent nature of cognitive, academic, behavioural, affective (emotional), neurological, experiential, family, peer, and school factors in explaining school and social success and failure.
